How To Fish In Idaho In Summer

Idaho’s diverse geography supports thriving populations of fish, including several species of trout, salmon, steelhead, bass, and more. Whether you prefer fly fishing along the river banks, casting from a boat, or dropping a lure from the bank, Idaho offers the perfect setting for a memorable fishing trip.

  • Fishing license: Anglers 14 or older must have a fishing license, which can be purchased online, through the Idaho Fish and Game app, or at local vendors. However, children under 13 do not need a license.
  • Permits: You will need special permits for salmon and steelhead, which have specific fishing seasons.
  • Free Fishing Day: Occurs on the second Saturday of June.
  • Ranch Fishing Pond: Red Horse Mountain Ranch has a fishing pond on the grounds. It is stocked with smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, crappie, brook trout, and perch. Conventional tackle, kayaks, and row boats are available at the pond. Fishing at the pond is catch-and-release only, and you do not need a fishing license.
  • Fly Casting Lessons: Red Horse Mountain Ranch offers fly casting lessons a few times during the week.
  • Guided Fly Fishing Trips: It might help to join a guided fishing journey. Fly fishing trips on the nearby legendary St. Joe River are offered for an additional fee through White Pine Outfitters.
  • Regulations: If you are heading off the Ranch for fishing, check the current Idaho Fish and Game regulations for specific rules, bag limits, and gear restrictions for the water body you are fishing.
