One part of a vacation that is often overlooked is the journey. There are many scenic roads, and along those roads are some unique, odd, weird, and wonderful roadside attractions. Idaho has plenty of them, and some will be on your way to one of the best vacation ranches in the state: Red Horse Mountain Ranch.
We are also relaunching our popular Outdoor Adventure Weeks for October.
Starting the weeks of Oct. 11, 18, and 25, give you the ultimate flexibility for your next getaway. Whether you want to stay for the full week or join us for a half-week escape (arriving on either Monday or Wednesday with a three-night minimum), there is an option that fits your schedule.
Odd, Weird, Fun Roadside Attractions In Idaho
Take your time when you drive to Red Horse Mountain Ranch to take in the amazing nature around you, and some of these roadside attractions you might pass by.
- Paul Bunyan / Big Friend: This is a Big Friend statue with no feet that was turned into Paul Bunyan. It also represents the local high school sports teams.
- Chimney Shaped Like Idaho: Attached to the side of the North Idaho Inn is a chimney that is shaped like the state of Idaho. The chimney faces the street, so it is easy to snap a photo of it.
- Dead Hydroplane Racers Memorial: Near the boat docks at The Resort at Lake Coeur d’Alene, you will find a brushed metal hydroplane boat and a jet fighter. A pedestal reads “In Memory of Warner E. Gardner, Lt. Col. U.S.A.F. (Ret.) and Fellow Drivers Who Devoted So Much To Hydroplane Racing.”
- Burger-Hoisting Paul Bunyan Sign: A tall wooden standee of winking, burger-eating Paul Bunyan can be found outside a burger stand. The standee was erected in 1954.
- Big Sewage Creatures: Outside the Coeur d’Alene’s wastewater treatment plant are seven abstract metal sculptures of microorganisms found in wastewater treatment. Sculpted by local artists Allen and Marydee Dodge. They named their work, “The Cleanup Crew.”
- Treaty Rock: “Frederick Post made a deal with Seltice, a prominent Coeur d’Alene Indian leader, to obtain more than 200 acres of Spokane River land to start a mill” at this location, according to a visitor. The property deal was etched in stone. Today, it is preserved behind a plexiglass shield.
